Emergencies Act Court Challenge by the Canadian Constitution Foundation

As you may already know, Christine Van Geyn, Litigation Coordinator for the Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF), took the federal government to court over their use of the Emergencies Act to end the Trucker Protest in Ottawa earlier this year.

While Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government claimed they had to do it, most saw this as a purely political act as well as a direct violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms – supposedly the highest law in the land.

Trudeau’s justice department has fought every inch of the way to prevent documents from being released to the court that – supposedly – provide the “proof” of why the federal government imposed the most draconian law in Canadian history on a bunch of peaceful, if noisy, protestors in Ottawa.

The Christine Van Geyn and CCF have battled non-stop for the release of these documents because without them, Canadians will never know the true rationale Justin Trudeau’s government used to violate the constitutional rights of citizens to peacefully protest in the nation’s capital.

Because of this consistent pressure from the CCF, the public, and other liberty-oriented organizations, Trudeau’s Liberal government has finally provided important documents they previously claimed must be kept secret.

Christine Van Geyn noted:

Our team of CCF lawyers are now reviewing these newly obtained documents to determine if the government has disclosed everything necessary.

If we determine that the government is continuing to hide documents, we will challenge them in court.

This is a part of our larger case challenging the Trudeau government’s use of the Emergencies Act in response to the trucker freedom convoy protests in February of this year.

As a legal charity dedicated to fighting for the fundamental rights and freedoms of Canadians, we take the historic invocation of this Act extremely seriously.

The Emergencies Act gives cabinet broad powers to enact orders and create new criminal laws. Any use of the Act needs to be heavily scrutinized.

Constitutional legal battles cost money, and this is where you can help.
